CASHNER : Because climbers are so free, you know. Live out of their cars, or wherever, and just enjoy life.

클라이머는 좀 자유롭잖아요. 차에서 살거나 어디서든 그냥 삶을 즐기고요.

LONG : 100 years from now, nobody's going to remember that ranger at all, but they are going to remember Jim Bridwell. They'll going to remember what the climbers of that generation did because that was history, and the rangers knew that, and that used to piss them off.

100년이 지난 지금, 아무도 레인저를 기억하지는 않지만 짐 브리드웰은 기억하고 있죠. 그 세대의 클라이머가 어떤것이 었는지 그들은 기억할거에요. 그건 역사였으니까요.

 

 

NARRATOR : Over the past 60 years, climbing has evolved to a place that would be unfathomable to the early pioneers of these walls. But that basic yearning for adventure remains the same. To step into the unknown and go beyond the possible.

지난 60년간 오랜 선구자들이 도무지 알 수 없던 이 장소에서, 클라이밍은 진화되었습니다. 하지만 기본적인 모험에 대한 갈망은 똑같이 남아 있죠. 미지의 세계로 들어가서 가능함을 넘어서는.

NARRATOR : As when Alex Honnold walked up to the base of Half Dome, the wall where it all began, and started up the 2000 foot route. 

With no equipment but his climbing shoes and a chalk bag.

알렉스 호놀드가 등반을 시작하는 하프돔 베이스로 걸어갑니다. 그리고 2,000 피트 높이의 루트를 시작하죠.

어떠한 장비도 없이, 암벽화와 쵸크백만 가지고서.

LONG : Half Dome was first climbed in 1957, and it was the first Big Wall ever climbed in the world. 51 years later, Alex Honnold comes along with the idea of climbing it without a rope. And that's sort of the ultimate statement of what's going on right now.

하프돔은 1957년 초등 되었고 그건 세상에서 없던 척 빅월 등반이었어요. 51년이 지나고 알렉스 호놀드는 로프 없이 등반을 하는 아이디어를 가지고 왔죠. 그리고 그건 어떤 엄청난 일이었어요.

HONNOLD : The same thing that drew Royal Robbins to Half Dome, is the same thing that drew me to Half Dome: Just the awe-inspiring face. I mean, I don't know how else to say it. Just how impressive the wall is. Being by yourself on a huge big wall, it just puts you in your place. But you also feel a part of something bigger. This rich history of climbing in Yosemite.

로얄 로빈스가 하프돔에 그렸던 꿈과 같은 꿈을 저도 하프돔에 그리는 거죠. 장엄한 벽면이요. 그러니까 제 말은 어떻게 말해야 할지 모르겠는데, 그냥 얼마나 저 암벽이 인상적인지요. 거대한 암벽에서 자기 자신이 되는 거에요. 그 속에 자신을 넣는거죠. 하지만 무언가 더 큰 것의 일부가 된것 같은 느낌이 들게 될거에요. 이 풍성한 요세미티 등반 역사에서요.

O'NEILL : Alex coming along to free solo Half Dome shows the arc of progress in Yosemite climbing.

알렉스가 하프돔 프리 솔로를 하러 와서 요세미티 등반의 진전을 보여줬죠.

HILL : Climbing in Yosemite, it's constantly evolving. People come there to make a statement about what's possible with passion, and vision, and heart.

요세미티 등반은 계속 진화합니다. 사람들은 이곳에 와서 어떤것이 열정과 비전과 심장으로 가능한지 제시하죠.

LONG : Yosemite will always be there for people that have a free spirit and plenty of raw energy. For the ones amongst us who want to adventure on a huge scale.

요세미티는 언제나 그곳에서 사람들이 자유로운 순수한 에너지를 갖게 해 줄 것입니다. 우리중 누군가 정말 커다란 스케일의 모험을 원하는 사람을 위해서요.

NARRATOR : As the sport of climbing has matured, Yosemite climbers have been making an effort to recast their outlaw image.

스포츠로 락클라이밍이 성장해 가면서 요세미티의 클라이머들은 그들의 불법적인 이미지를 바꾸기 위해 노력했습니다.

POTTER : Climbers and rangers working together to clean up the park.

클라이머와 레인저가 함께 일하면서 요세미티를 청소하는거죠.

PARK RANGER : Even though there's always been that friction between climbers and rangers, I think the Park Service is recognizing that climbers really love this place. They want to protect Yosemite, and, when it comes down to it, the mission is the same for both groups.

클라이머와 레인저 간에 항상 충돌이 있어왔지만, 관리공단은 클라이머들이 정말 이곳을 사랑한다는걸 깨닫기 시작했죠. 그들은 요세미티를 보호하고 싶어하죠. 그런 관점에서 볼 때 두 그룹의 미션은 같아요.

NARRATOR : But in an era of increasing good will, there remains, at the heart of Yosemite climbing, a spirit that's not so easily tamed.

하지만 호의가 축적되고 있는 이 시기에도 쉽게 길들여 지지 않는 요세미티 등반 정신은 남아있습니다.
